Download Headliner Announcement - Saturday brings us ... the mighty BLACK SABBATH

After yesterday's first announcement of Download 2016's Sunday headliner as IRON MAIDEN, the eagerly awaited next announcement has just been confirmed as the mighty BLACK SABBATH.

The captivating Prince of Darkness's piercing vocals and energetic showmanship will be back in the spotlight next year at Donnington Park. What started out as four hard-core working class guys from dreary 60's industrial Birmingham are truly global legends and widely credited founders of British metal.

Announced as part of their final tour, if you have not experienced them live yet this will be one not to miss!

The band will also be hitting the road on a run of UK headline datesthis November in support of the new record, including a London show at The Black Heart in Camden on Wednesday 11thNovember – see below for full dates.

‘Nightmare Recovery’ is the latest step in a brave new direction that sees the four piece continuously tinkering with the rules of modern rock, as evidenced by the EP’s further departure from the tried and tested formula into territory that crosses paths with post-punk, post-rock and shoegaze influences whilst retaining the melodic surges and choruses that have so far served them well.

Discussing their ambitions for the future earlier this year, guitarist Stuart Galbraith said: “You’ve got to believe you’re going to do bigger and better things every time… you’ve got to have that vision or else you’re not going to do it. We're here, so it's kinda worked.”

Busily building their reputation as a blinding and unrelenting live act over the past few years, UNITED FRUIT have previously toured with the likes of Twin Atlantic and The Twilight Sad, and been a part of theDIY and Dr Martens sponsored #StandForSomething tour. They have appeared at festivals all over the world including Scotland’s T in The Park, Czech Republic’s Rock For People and Austin’s infamousSXSW 2015, where they played theStereogum and Exploding In Sound Records showcase along with several other appearances.

Previous single ‘Open Your Eyes’ has racked up an impressive 68,000 Soundcloud streams and counting, with support from BBC Radio One and saw praise heaped on the band from the likes of The 405, Clash, Drowned In Sound, The Skinny, Artrocker and more.

At the tail end of 2014, the Yorkshire-born-and-bred 5-piece were out on the road with Marmozets and Lonely The Brave. To coincide with that, they released a DIY video for the painfully autobiographical (for many of us!)‘I Should Have Gone To Uni’. In early 2015, the band went out on tour as special guests of Enter Shikari. By way of celebrating on that occasion, they released a video for a track called ‘Am I Weird?’ - yet again highlighting the band’s fiercely DIY aesthetic, the video was shot by them and a friend in their rehearsal space.

Fast-forward to now(-ish) and, following a summer of 2015 packed with festival appearances, Allusondrugs recently unveiled the trippy video for a track named‘Sunset Yellow’, and then immediately afterwards alsoreleased a 7” single with the good folks at Too Pure Singles Club entitled ‘Magic College’ / ‘Her Crown’.

As busy as they’ve been to date, all this disparate activity was scratching at the edges of the band’s collective OCD, so a decision was made to compile all these internet-based and plastic-confined beauties into one old fashioned silver disc, as well as making the tracks available digitally and on streaming services worldwide.

An even more limited edition pre-order bundle version of the EP comes with a bonus DIY hand-painted-sleeve CD featuring four different versions of ‘Sunset Yellow’. Allusondrugs previous hand-painted releases are now all long gone and much-sought-after, and this is the first they’ve done for a while.

‘Am I Weird’ is released Friday 23rdOctober 2015

Rockaway Beach Preview

We caught up with Ian Crowther of The Way Of Music curator of Rockawaybeach.co.uk to get the lowdown on the festival which kicks off next weekend 9-11th October in Bognor Regis.

Rockaway Beach is a  boutique festival for lovers of live music, showcasing an eclectic mix of the best established, emerging and breakthrough alternative artists. On the bill amongst so many others are Johnny Marr and Skinny Girl Diet, pictured below.

Loud! Noises!: Did you have a general theme or concept that inspired this event?

Ian: The inspiration for Rockaway Beach comes from the excitement of hearing great music for the first time. I wanted to bring together a selection of today’s leading alternative artists to showcase new music.

Loud! Noises!: You have put together a great eclectic mix of established and artists and breakthrough acts, it is great to see festivals supporting the smaller acts as well as established. How do you go about finding the best emerging breakthrough acts of the year?

Ian: I go to experience a lot of live music, always seeking out something special. Ever since I can remember, I was that guy who found new music and wanted to press it into the hands of his friends. Curating a festival is just like making mix tapes but on a bigger scale. Of course I receive suggestions all the time of who I might like to check out. Gum Takes Tooth are a great example of that. This is a different kind of weekend, focussed very much on artists producing new music. Even those that are really well established, such as Spiritualized, The Membranes and Echo & The Bunnymen, are still putting out amazing new music.  As well we have a great selection of exceptionally talented artists that have broken through recently like Nadine Shah, Ghostpoet, and Public Service Broadcasting.

Loud! Noises!: How did the event come about and what unique qualities will the festival have?

Ian: I still go to festivals, but gigs for me are a better live music experience. So at Rockaway Beach we want to deliver the best of both – a festival community of music-lovers congregating on a single site, together with the great sound experience and vibrant atmosphere you get at an indoor venue.

Loud! Noises!: So the festival will have a real community vibe which is great for the audience to really engage with the artists.

Ian: Yes, Rockaway Beach will be an intimate festival allowing audience and artist to get close and share their love of music. Butlin’s Bognor Regis was the first choice location as all show venues are indoor with exceptional sound quality. On-site accommodation and access to great food and drink means that we can give festival-goers the best weekend experience whatever the weather.

Loud! Noises!: Personally what are your passions and influences musically, how much are these influences brought into play in curating Roackaway Beach?

Ian: Do you remember the first time you heard The Ramones, The Smiths, or Young Fathers? Music can change your life… and live music is the best. My journey started with The Wedding Present at St George’s Hall in Bradford, included time in Cambridge for Th’ Faith Healers at The Boat Race and PJ Harvey at The Junction, next stop London where I caught artists like Asian Dub Foundation and St Etienne, then onto Glasgow for Arab Strap at King Tut’s, The Streets at The Barrowlands, The Delgados at The Mitchell Theatre, and Linton Kwesi Johnstone at The Renfew Ferry… All these experiences and many more inspired me to turn Rockaway Beach from a dream into a reality.

Loud! Noises!: Are there any standout artists you are looking forward to in particular?

Ian: Now that is a really difficult one… it is so hard to choose when every artist has been hand-picked because they bring something special to the festival… There are artists on the bill that I have loved since my youth, such Band of Holy Joy, Johnny Marr and The Monochrome Set. Young Fathers were one of the firsts groups I booked for Rockaway Beach, having been a fan since their first mixtape, and seeing them live is something else. They are for me one of the most exciting artists around. I am really excited to have some exceptionally talented artists that are emerging this year, such as Daudi Matsiko, Zyna Hel, Blaenavon, Misty Miller, and St. Sleep’s highly anticipated first live show. There is an amazing buzz about these guys. James Holden’s set is something else, he is so well known for his work as a music producer and DJ. His live work is relatively new, and I know the audience is going to be astounded. Finally, being based in Glasgow, loving its vibrant live music scene, I am proud that the first Rockaway Beach includes amazing live artists such as RM Hubbert, Errors, St Deluxe, Emma Pollock, Miaoux Miaoux, John Knox Sex Club.

Loud! Noises!: There are also a good few international artists coming over for the festival which is great.

Ian: International artists always bring something unique to a festival. I am pleased to welcome Jennie Vee from NYC, Pinkshinyultrablast from St Petersburg, Emmecosta from Gothenburg, and Shocking Pinks all the way from Wellington, New Zealand to Rockaway Beach. Also I met The Jaguar Club after their gig in a small club on the lower East Side of Manhattan in February and really excited that they agreed to come over and play Rockaway Beach.

Loud! Noises!: This all sounds great! Being possibly the first of a series, where do you see it progressing from here and have you had a great deal of interest?

Ian: I’ve been thrilled by the amount of support Rockaway Beach has received from the music industry and music fans everywhere. We are already making plans for RB2016, so standby for some early announcements!

Bestival 2015 - Live Review / Pictures

As Bestival started to wind up for the weekend, Thursday saw Jamie XX and Underworld  headlining the Big Top. Underworld’s vocalist Karl Hyde gave an enthused performance really drawing the crowd in. Check out our exclusive pictures from their performance here:

With the festival now in full swing Friday was gloriously sunny and truly felt like a Summer Of Love.

The day was shaping up nicely with performances by Tame Impala, Honeyblood, Fat White Family, Misty Miller and Boxed In. We caught Boxed In on the Invaders of the Future stage, their debut album is out now including the single False Alarm. Check out their luxurious blend of electro-indie led by multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Oli Bayston on the link below and also our exclusive pictures from their performance here:

In an afternoon set on the Main Stage Charli XCX

bounded on stage and really got the crowd going with her upbeat energy and sense of humour. Introducing Body Of My Own “for all the ladies who have pussy power” she is a strong character and with a Gwen Stefani twang to her vocals Charli XCX’s brand of pop has a fresh and vibrant edge.

With fun, light-hearted tales of Breaking Up “everything was wrong with you so breaking up was easy to do” and the song Break The Rules about “Dancing / getting wrecked” the crowd was really getting involved. With the girl-gang chorus of Boom Clap chants and hand claps rang clear across the site.

Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer was a highlight for Friday, from deepest darkest Surrey his performance in Club Da Da was packed out with a queue of eager folks waiting for their turn … one in one out. Check out the link below, if you have not already discovered this gem you need it in your life!

Friday’s headliners Duran Duran wow’d the crowd with so very much pyro! Set opener Wild Boys was lavishly set alight on the main stage and they were going down really well. Firm favourite of all the Duran classics Hungry Like The Wolf was up next and then A View To A Kill amongst all the usual favourites.

On Saturday we checked out LA’s Girlpool on the Invaders stage. Cleo and Harmony treated us to their beautifully acoustic sound that really felt like they had something to say. With the lyrically narrative storytelling and Velvet Underground / Verruca Salt tinged sound. Highlights were Blah, Blah, Blah with its catchy girl gang harmonies and “Before The World Was Big” with its chorus developing into a seem-less round.

Saturday was packed with plenty to see, the secret Main Stage act was finally revealed to be one other than 90’s favourites House Of Pain.

Kate Tempest on the Main Stage and Slaves in the Big Top:

Saturday's headliners The Chemical Brothers on the Main Stage. Following their vastly popular new album Born In The Echoes they mixed new material with old favourites which translated well with a great lighting show to provide an overwhelming all encompassing musical experience.

By the time Sunday rolled around there was no way the threat of rain would dampen spirits. We started off the day with Portsmouth favourites Kassassin Street in the Big Top,

It was then onto the amazing Skinny Girl Diet on the Invaders of The Future stage.

Leading up to the grand finale of the weekend we caught The Jacksons on the Main Stage, who ran down all the favourite hits including a touching rendition of I'll Be There.

The grand finale had Missy Elliot appear from a tower beneath the Main Stage, full of energy for her first Bestival performance and played all the favourites like Get Ur Freak On, Work It and The Rain. The actual rain did not put off revellers and the massive firework finale was a fitting end to an eventful fun festival experience.
