LUCY ROSE - Live Review / Gallery with support from Flytes

LUCY ROSE – WEDGEWOOD ROOMS, PORTSMOUTH, 15th November 2015, Review by KEITH (MR TEETHS):

The main support act this evening was due to be Mercury Music Prize nomination C Duncan, who unfortunately cancelled on the afternoon of the show due to losing his voice, this in turn meant the last minute addition of Lucy Rose’s keyboard player (under the moniker Swamp Mother) with Flyte being moved up a slot on the bill.

Much though industry awards can be considered controversial given they’re not chosen “by the people“ it was still a shame C Duncan had to pull out as the Mercury Music Prize has been largely successful in launching the careers of Dizzee Rascal, Elbow and Franz Ferdinand to name but a few.

It also meant that as a result of her early stage time I missed Swamp Mother and instead witnessed Flyte, who to be fair seemed to have a large following of their own and with tonight being a sell-out also had plenty of new fans to potentially win over with their middle of the road indie.

Their frontman interacted with the crowd, reminiscing on having played a battle of the bands at the Wedgewood rooms and although in that environment I may have enjoyed them a little more when it came to it ultimately Flyte were all a bit too bland for my liking.

When Lucy Rose took to the stage, I have to admit I still knew little about her – except for the fact that whilst she may well be tiny in stature, she had managed to sell out the Wedgewood Rooms, something that she too found very exciting and genuinely surprised at the turn out for the night.

Her popularity was soon understandable, for Lucy Rose is more than just another female singer songwriter, if she was to appear with just an acoustic guitar (which for one song in the encore she did) I feel her talents may be a little lost as having the full band really brought her songs to life.

Lucy Rose’s first album “Like I used to” was recorded in her parents’ house and soon reached top twenty in the UK album charts, it’s no wonder then that from her humble beginnings to being propelled into the mainstream Lucy appeared somewhat nervous about the reaction her new album “Work it Out” would receive, between songs she often reiterated how there were no expectations upon her first release and is now aware of the expectations for the second.

When it came to it though putting down her guitar and stepping behind keyboards for the more stripped back “Nebraska” showed there was definitely nothing to worry about, ok there was a little of the Saturday night curse with people talking but as soon as things picked up with more lively numbers such as “Koln” there was plenty of crowd interaction – from cheesy handclaps to Lucy Rose noticing a dance routine near the front of the crowd, everyone appeared in good spirits and as the encore came to a close after a mammoth 18 track set-list it was no wonder the Wedgewood Rooms was the place to be on such a wet and windy evening.

Weezer - Do You Wanna Get High

Weezer have just announced its second new song in a month "Do You Wanna Get High?"  and nobody could put it better than this ...

"Do You Wanna Get High?" sounds like it's a really yucky and intentionally uncomfortable portrayal of the addict's life. There's nothing sexy, fun or funny about it, and it's cruising along doing its thing, when Whoa Hey what is this sweet little bridge thing? Suddenly the song is sunny and sweet and in my mind, creatively this is when the high kicks in - suddenly everything is lovely and dreamy (and not the gritty reality of the rest of the song).

The band will also be hitting the road on a run of UK headline datesthis November in support of the new record, including a London show at The Black Heart in Camden on Wednesday 11thNovember – see below for full dates.

‘Nightmare Recovery’ is the latest step in a brave new direction that sees the four piece continuously tinkering with the rules of modern rock, as evidenced by the EP’s further departure from the tried and tested formula into territory that crosses paths with post-punk, post-rock and shoegaze influences whilst retaining the melodic surges and choruses that have so far served them well.

Discussing their ambitions for the future earlier this year, guitarist Stuart Galbraith said: “You’ve got to believe you’re going to do bigger and better things every time… you’ve got to have that vision or else you’re not going to do it. We're here, so it's kinda worked.”

Busily building their reputation as a blinding and unrelenting live act over the past few years, UNITED FRUIT have previously toured with the likes of Twin Atlantic and The Twilight Sad, and been a part of theDIY and Dr Martens sponsored #StandForSomething tour. They have appeared at festivals all over the world including Scotland’s T in The Park, Czech Republic’s Rock For People and Austin’s infamousSXSW 2015, where they played theStereogum and Exploding In Sound Records showcase along with several other appearances.

Previous single ‘Open Your Eyes’ has racked up an impressive 68,000 Soundcloud streams and counting, with support from BBC Radio One and saw praise heaped on the band from the likes of The 405, Clash, Drowned In Sound, The Skinny, Artrocker and more.

At the tail end of 2014, the Yorkshire-born-and-bred 5-piece were out on the road with Marmozets and Lonely The Brave. To coincide with that, they released a DIY video for the painfully autobiographical (for many of us!)‘I Should Have Gone To Uni’. In early 2015, the band went out on tour as special guests of Enter Shikari. By way of celebrating on that occasion, they released a video for a track called ‘Am I Weird?’ - yet again highlighting the band’s fiercely DIY aesthetic, the video was shot by them and a friend in their rehearsal space.

Fast-forward to now(-ish) and, following a summer of 2015 packed with festival appearances, Allusondrugs recently unveiled the trippy video for a track named‘Sunset Yellow’, and then immediately afterwards alsoreleased a 7” single with the good folks at Too Pure Singles Club entitled ‘Magic College’ / ‘Her Crown’.

As busy as they’ve been to date, all this disparate activity was scratching at the edges of the band’s collective OCD, so a decision was made to compile all these internet-based and plastic-confined beauties into one old fashioned silver disc, as well as making the tracks available digitally and on streaming services worldwide.

An even more limited edition pre-order bundle version of the EP comes with a bonus DIY hand-painted-sleeve CD featuring four different versions of ‘Sunset Yellow’. Allusondrugs previous hand-painted releases are now all long gone and much-sought-after, and this is the first they’ve done for a while.

‘Am I Weird’ is released Friday 23rdOctober 2015
